The adding of fake beams and ageing the materials to create a period look is a common feature in many homes and buildings. Responding to the structural aesthetics in contemporary architecture I have created cast glass girders as imitation beams for the modern age.
The glass girders reference the materials used in the construction and structure of a modern building. Viewing them as ornamentation and not as an integral element to the strength of the structure. The twisting and bending of a glass ‘girder’ add to the concept of the ‘distressed beam’.
